As a Geographer, you will: Utilize professional knowledge of geography and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) science to support Regional Office's Initiatives, in order to understand and mitigate the potential impacts of surface coal mining operations on land and environmental resources.Populate geospatial databases by developing an interpreting mine map and terrain model data, use available spatial geological, hydrologic, mining engineering, biological, and global positioning system (GPS) data.Analyze information gained in preparing reports, maps, geographic information systems (GIS) data, and other re-orientations of geospatial information.Utilize computers in the inputting and manipulationof digital data for GIS software, computer-aided drafting software (e.g., Environmental Systems Research Institute, Automatical Computer Aided Design, Earth Resources Data Analysis System), raster-to-vector image conversion products, geographic correlation, word processing, spreadsheets, relational databases, and related software applications.Develop recommendations for remedial actions to abate problems identified on mine sites by creating and modifying digital datasets and numerical datasets, using appropriate network, mass storage, and workstation/server resources.Serve as a project team member or leader and provide technical support and guidance to other scientific disciplines within the field office on GIS/geo-database design, programming, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, etc. Travel Required Occasional travel - up to 5 days a month.
