Job Description



A Medical Language Specialist is a medical language expert who interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other health care professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of health care services. Transcribe or Edit medical dictation to provide a permanent record of patient care. Apply knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and English language rules to the transcription. Recognize, interpret and evaluate inconsistencies, discrepancies and inaccuracies in medical dictation, and appropriately edit, revise and clarify them without altering the meaning of the dictation. Clarify dictation which is unclear or incomplete, seeking assistance as necessary. Use reference materials appropriately and efficiently. Meet quality and productivity standards and deadlines. Format reports according to established guidelines. Demonstrate an understanding of the medico-legal implications and responsibilities related to the transcription of patient records to protect the patient and business/institution. Operate designated word processing, dictation and transcription equipment as directed to complete assignments. Follow policies and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of our company. Contribute to team efforts by working and communicating in a positive and cooperative manner.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Minimum education level of associate degree or equivalent in work experience and continuing education. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine, surgery, diagnostic testing, radiology, pathology, pharmacology, and the various medical specialties as required in areas of assignment. Knowledge of medical transcription guidelines and standards. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including English usage, grammar, punctuation and style. Ability to understand diverse accents and dialects and varying dictation styles. Ability to use appropriated reference materials. Ability to operate designated word processing, dictation and transcription equipment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work with time constraints. Ability to focus and concentrate. Excellent listening skills. Excellent eye, hand, and auditory coordination. Ability to understand and apply relevant legal concepts (i.e. confidentiality).
