Multilingual Connections is a language center in Chicago that connects people to their communities and the world. We offer translation and transcription services, workplace training and classes and fun events. Jill Bishop was always fascinated by language, and this love brought her to Spain, Argentina and Israel, where she studied Spanish language and culture, taught English to business professionals and researched the dialect of Spanish spoken by descendants of the Jews who were exiled from Spain in 1492. While finishing her doctorate at UCLA, she was offered an opportunity to work as a corporate anthropologist back home in Chicago, and despite her plans to remain in academia, she took her first step into the world of applied anthropology. From there, a few years overseeing language and culture programs for 130 Chipotle restaurants gave her new insight into ways of applying language in the workplace, and in 2005, Jill launched her company…in her basement (anyone who launches a business in a garage obviously doesn’t live through Chicago winters!). At first, the focus was exclusively on English and Spanish training for the workplace, but soon clients started asking for translation services. Within a few years, Jill moved the company and her handful of employees above ground and started offering language classes, private tutoring and intensive Bilingual Boot Camp in over a dozen languages for those looking to improve language skills for work, for travel, for family or just because. In June of 2013, the company moved to a larger office in West Bucktown, with much more room to support its growing translation, transcription and interpretation services – now offered in over 75 languages – and language training programs.
